We want to make sure that you receive WREX text alerts for school closings, severe weather, breaking news, programming changes, special offers and more. That's why we're following up now on our story about the opt-in process from earlier this week.
Like many other text message providers, we sent thousands of messages to our subscribers, asking them to agree to a couple of new terms of service, as required by the federal Telephone Consumers Protection Act. So many companies did this that the computer systems designed to deliver those messages have been flooded over the past few days, sometimes resulting in messages being delayed or not getting through.
To those who replied, thank you. You will continue to receive the same fast and free text alerts and special offers you've come to depend on.

Like many other text message providers, we are doing the re-opt-in process to comply with the federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). It was originally designed to protect consumers from telemarketer harassment. It now covers SMS text messaging because these messages are also delivered by phone. As of October 16th, the law requires consumers who sign up for text messages to acknowledge two things:
1) Text messages come from an automated system
2) Consent is not required to purchase goods and services.
Other than agreeing to that, nothing about our text message services will change. They will continue to be fast and free. Standard carrier message and data rates may apply.
