The first Rockford Housing Authority residents to participate in the Rockford Etsy Craft Entrepreneurship Program are celebrating their graduation.
The 12 students finished the four-week course Thursday. The program teaches self-sufficiency and the entrepreneurial skills necessary to successfully create and sell art and crafts on www.etsy.com. Successfully completing the program helped the students not only earn their own laptop, but gain the means to earn supplemental income and grow the self-sufficiency to eventually move out of RHA properties.
Participant Jamie Kasper explained, "Before I was not able to express myself creatively in Rockford without scrutiny, but I must say that I have been in every inch of this city and it is changing for the better and we are embracing the arts and diversity instead of hushing it and because of all these great programs and mentorships in much needed areas of the city."
The class is part of a partnership between the City of Rockford and Etsy.
