The Pentagon's second-ranking official is stepping down, but the reason why has not been revealed.
In a statement released Thursday, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel met with and accepted the resignation of his deputy, Ashton Carter. Carter's resignation will be effective December 4.
The 59-year-old took the office of deputy defense secretary two years ago under Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. Prior to that, he was the head of acquisition, technology, and logistics.
Hagel said Carter possesses an "unparalleled knowledge of every facet" of the country's defense system and he will be missed.
