If the federal government shutdown continues, Illinois workers who receive their paychecks from federal funding could see more layoffs.
Almost 100 temporary layoffs have already been issued since the government shut down last week, including employees from the Illinois Department of Employment Security and the Labor Department. Governor Pat Quinn warned Monday that those layoffs could increase.
When the federal government last shut down in 1995, around 1,200 temporary layoffs were issued in Illinois. All of those employees were eventually rehired.
