New fishing pier named after longtime Rockford alderman

Posted: Updated:

A special location off the Rock River is now dedicated to people with disabilities who love to fish or enjoy the water.

The Rockford Park District has officially dedicated a handicap accessible fishing pier to longtime Rockford Alderman Davey Johnson.  Johnson passed away in 2009.

The pier has lower railing sections to provide a place to rest a fishing pole and have a better view of the water.

"This is Dave Johnson.  I mean the fishing and that kind of stuff, and how he felt about this community was just really something," says Johnson friend, Robert C. Bell.

The new pier can be accessed through the Rock River Recreation Path and wheelchair parking is nearby.
