Friday Night Football Preview

Posted:

We have another big slate of Friday Night Football games in week six of the high school football season, including a key matchup between Auburn and Harlem. Harlem is 4-1, and just a game behind first place Boylan in the NIC-10 standings. After losing to Hononegah last week, Auburn sits at 2-3 and needs to start putting together some wins if it wants to reach the playoffs for a second straight year. The Knights got off to a 7-0 lead at Hononegah, but could not muster any more points and lost 27-7. The Huskies had a test against Belvidere. They built up a big lead and had to hold off a late charge from the Bucs, winning 56-48.

Another key game in the NIC-10 standings features Guilford and Belvidere. The aforementioned Bucs showed what their offense can do when it gets rolling, putting up 48 points in a loss to Harlem. But a loss is a loss, and Belvidere has three straight in the loss column. Guilford is 4-1, and is looking to get back in the playoffs after missing out last year. The Vikings' only loss came at the hands of undefeated Boylan. Guilford had no trouble knocking off Belvidere North last week, setting the tone on special teams early in the game with a blocked punt recovered for a touchdown, and a forced fumble on the ensuing kick return.

After a 2-1 start, Belvidere North has lost two straight games, including the game at Guilford last week. The Blue Thunder tries to get back in the win column against 1-4 Freeport. Pretzels running back Steve McShane has big play capability, so Belvidere North will have to keep him in check. Freeport played tough against Boylan last week, hanging around until Boylan pulled away in the second half. North quarterback Jace Bankord threw for two straight 300-yard games, but was held in check at Guilford.

First place Boylan has won 70 straight conference games after beating Freeport last Friday night. The Titans try to keep adding to that streak as they host East. The E-Rabs are 2-3 after picking up back-to-back victories over Freeport and Jefferson. East was trailing 32-13 against Jefferson in the second half last week, but did not panic and came back to beat the J-Hawks.

The final game in the NIC-10 features Hononegah and Jefferson playing at Auburn's Wyeth Stadium. Hononegah is up to a 3-2 mark after starting the season 1-2. The Indians got down against Auburn last week, but finished the game with 27 unanswered points to get their second straight win. Jefferson is 0-5 so far on the season, and has been outscored 199-68 through those five games.

Outside of the NIC-10, North Boone faces undefeated Harvard with first place on the line in the Big Northern East. Winnebago travels to Genoa-Kingston for a crossover game, and in the NUIC-Northwest, Lena-Winslow tries to bounce back from a loss to E/PC as the Panthers face first place Forreston, who's tied for the conference lead with E/PC.
