ROCKFORD (WREX) -

The government shutdown could affect jobs with a Rockford defense contractor.

United Technologies announces 5,000 layoffs are possible.  Cutbacks might begin Monday at UTC facilities in Connecticut, Florida, and Alabama.  According to a spokeswoman, the longer the shutdown goes, it's likely to impact employees at UTC Aerospace Systems in Rockford.

UTCAS used to be known as Hamilton Sundstrand.
