Illinois military veterans join the effort for legalizing gay marriage in Illinois.
The group called "Veterans Unite for Marriage" is pressing the Illinois House to allow same-sex marriage in the legislative session that begins later this month. U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam , Clayton Peterson of rock Island says despite his service, he does not have "the same marital rights as straight couples."
Federal benefits are available to spouses of gay service members only if their marriages are recognized in their home states. Gay marriage legislation won Senate approval in February, but never had enough support in the House to get a roll call before the General Assembly in May. The House and the Senate are controlled by Democrats.
