A late night argument at a large Rockford apartment complex ends with a man stabbed multiple times. Winnebago County Sheriff's Deputies were called out to the Great Oaks Apartments for a domestic problem. When police arrived they found a 30-year-old man dead, killed with a kitchen knife. They arrested his girlfriend.
"We received a call from a neighbor that there was a person that was stabbed at that location," says Deputy Chief Dominic Iasparro.
The Winnebago County Sheriff's Department went to the apartments near Linden and Alpine Roads around 11:30 p.m. Monday. They found Kathy Mazique dead. The coroner says he was stabbed multiple times.
"It appears to be the result of a domestic that had taken place. We have a 27-year-old female in custody," says Deputy Chief Iasparro.
That woman is Sarah Bates, Mazique's girlfriend. According to the coroner's office he had recently, legally changed his name from Kent to Kathy and was considering more life changes. A neighbor says she saw the couple together the night before Mazique's death.
"They were out just having a bonfire and just talking," says Judith Giza.
She says the two did not live together and she never heard or saw them arguing but they had confided in her the relationship had troubles.
"They both have issues, problems I would say, so they were trying to work through their problems," she says.
But Giza never thought it would come to such a violent end. She thinks there is still a lot to investigate before the case is over.
"They will have to look into and see what goes on in there. But yeah, that's shocking," says Giza.
Bates has been charged with aggravated battery with a weapon and aggravated domestic battery. She is being held on a $100,000 bail.
