Illinois State Police find $25,000 in cash during traffic stop

Troopers with Illinois State Police District 13 arrested three men and recovered cannabis and over $25,000 in cash during a Tuesday traffic stop on Interstate 64 westbound at milepost 45.

The three men were traveling from Georgia to Colorado when they were stopped for speeding. All three gave the trooper conflicting stories on their destination and the driver admitted to having a loaded 9mm pistol next to the driver's seat.

A more extensive search of the vehicle revealed $25,037 in cash under the driver's seat and in the trunk, a jar with 5.6 grams of cannabis under the driver's seat, and an AR-15 rifle in the trunk. None of the men had a valid concealed carry permit from Georgia.

The men were charged with the following:

  • Joshua A. Brown, 27: Hiram, GA
    • Aggravated unlawful use of a weapon
    • Possession of cannabis 2.5-10 grams
  • Javier D. Padilla, 22: Kennesaw, GA
    • Possession of cannabis 2.5-10 grams
  • Morgan A. Brown, 19: Hiram, GA
    • Possession of cannabis 2.5-10 grams

Police say the men later admitted to traveling to Colorado to buy cannabis with the money in the car. The investigation is still ongoing.
