Rockford Speedway Gears Up for National Short Track Championships


"One Great Racing Weekend" returns for the 48th straight year this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Rockford Speedway.

The National Short Track Championships include 14 divisions over three days testing Rockford Speedway's "high banks."

Friday night @ 7:07 p.m. it's the 'Championship Round' of the Cool 5 Series, featuring a 48 lap 'Weekly Warrior' Late Model Feature, plus Sportsman, Short Trackers, Roadrunners, Hornet vs. Bandit Challenge and Figure 8 racing.

Saturday is a full day of racing with "Faster Than a Speeding Bullet Qualifying" for five divisions starting at 2:15 PM. "Short Track Saturday Night" gets underway at 5:05 p.m. and features a 108 lap feature for the Big 8 Late Models presented by Gandrud Chevrolet as well as preliminary events for the Super Late Models as they prepare for their main event on Sunday. Also racing on Saturday night will be the Great Northern Sportsman Series, Illini Racing Series Midgets, Hobby Stox and Illinois Vintage Racers.

'Championship Sunday' begins at 12:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon and includes the 48th Annual National Short Track Championship 200 lap Super Late Model feature along with Super Late Model Last Chance Races. The Mid American Stock Car Series returns for the 21st straight year to NSTC and will contest in a 75 lap feature. Also on the docket will be the Weekly Late Model Ultimate Challenge Race and One-on-One Late Model Match Racing.

The National Short Track Championships are one of the premiere Short Track Stock Car Racing events in the United States, not to mention one of the longest tenured events in the US. Drivers like Mark Martin and the late Dick Trickle have used Rockford wins as springboards to super-stardom. The late Joe Shear, local hero and six-time Rockford Speedway champion, won the event a record EIGHT times.

Drivers like Matt Kenseth, Rusty Wallace, Greg Biffle, Paul Menard, Jamie McMurray, Travis Kvapil and more have raced this event yet were never able to win it. Participants have came from 24 states and Canada to test Rockford Speedway. It truly is "One Great Racing Weekend."
