Nearly a hundred new jobs are on their way to the Rockford area as a couple of companies have plans for expansion.
Practice Velocity CEO David Stern has seen the business change over the years. It started with just three employees, now that number is nearly 230.
"It's really exciting to not be able to find a parking space here at Practice Velocity right now. We're moving to a new building, we'll have parking. But it's exciting because every parking space that's filled up and not available means that another family has a job," says Stern.
That new building will be the old Kohl's department store in the Machesney Park Mall. Turning the empty space into offices will mean a $5 million investment.
Stern says the result will be even more jobs. "In the next year and a half we plan to add another 75 jobs, lots of them in high paying software development. "
Not far away, Curtis, a Detroit based company, is also growing. With two Machesney Park locations, Curtis Metal Finishing and Curtis Thermal Processing, the business has plans to increase their workforce by more than 20 percent.
"We have a fair amount of land at both of those locations, so the idea is to expand the footprint at those locations," says Jeffrey Myles, Corporate Councel for Curtis Metal Finishing Co.
That equates to 14 new hires. All this job growth brought Illinois' Governor here to celebrate.
"They could have gone elsewhere, but they chose Illinois because of our workforce and the skilled men and women who know how to get the job done on time," says Governor Pat Quinn.
Myles says his local agriculture, automotive and aerospace customers are also to thank.
"We've got a good customer base and their businesses are fortunately growing and as a result of that, that's helped us to grow our business."
A third company, a Rockford based one, will also be expanding their workforce. HMC products is moving to a new facility and has plans to add 5 new positions.
