SwedishAmerican Hospital will team up with several local agencies to host an active shooter drill this week to assess the facility's response in an emergency situation.
The drill will take place Thursday, September 19 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the hospital's East State Street entrance. Participants will include hospital staff, Rockford police and firefighters, District 205, the Winnebago County Coroner, and local media.
"You know, part of our concern with executing the drill is that people understand that it's a drill," SwedishAmerican President & CEO Dr. Bill Gorski said. "Clearly when you do something like this in a public arena, there could be the perception that it's actually happening, which of course it is not."
During the exercise, no public access will be available at that entrance. Access to preadmission testing, infusion rooms, ambulatory care, X-ray, EKG, lab, and outpatient registration will be impacted. Patients and visitors can access the hospital through the Heart Hospital entrance on Charles and 10th Streets.
No real weapons will be used during the exercise.
