After over 48 years at the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Dick Meyers has announced his retirement.
Meyers says he'll leave office once his current term ends late next year. Dick Meyers was appointed Winnebago County Sheriff in 1997 when former Sheriff Don Gasparini retired. Meyers was first elected Sheriff in 1998 and has since been re-elected three times.
Meyers said in a statement, "Although I still love my job as I always have, there comes a time when a person looks forward to new opportunities in life. I'm looking forward to spending more time with family, friends, grandchildren, and going fishing."
Republican Gary Caruana is the only announced candidate for Winnebago County Sheriff so far.
