A Rockford group hopes actually seeing and touching pieces of steel from ground zero inspires people.
That steel will be the centerpiece for the Winnebago County 9/11 First Responders Memorial. Group members plan to raise $911,000. They're about a third of the way there. The goal is to have the memorial done by the 15th anniversary of the September 11th attacks. Organizers say people have their own personal reactions to the steel.
"They're inspired, they're kind of awe struck. They may say a few words to us or tell us a story about where they were. Or they may just look at it and touch the steel and you can tell it's very impactful," said Will Pederson, 9-11 Memorial President.
Granite City donated part of all food and drink sales Wednesday to the memorial. If you'd like to donate, Click Here.
