Rockford police say gun violence is on the rise and the department is seeing an increase in calls for shots fired.
In just one call during August, 82 shell casings were found near the Fairgrounds Housing Complex. Police say that during that month, there was a 36 percent increase in shooting incidents.
"I believe there were 50 incidents of aggravated battery and shots fired," Deputy Chief Dave Hopkins said. "When you break those down you have eight aggravated batteries, which all involved a firearm and 42 shots fired. Sometimes it's just luck that 42 shots fired are not where someone has actually been struck."
The Rockford Police Department released the information during its monthly Compstat meeting on Wednesday.
