Rockford police say they've been keeping busy with a rise in property crimes on the city's west side.
During Wednesday morning's Compstat meeting, the department discussed a spike in vandalism and burglaries over the last month, and some of those burglaries had a surprising element to them.
"Most burglars burglarize when they are most comfortable, when you're not home. The ones that I saw on North Main and Harlem Boulevard were unusual because they were early morning when people probably are home, and they are the most disturbing to me. That's where we had the most quickest response to those areas," Deputy Chief Dave Hopkins explained.
According to Chief Hopkins, burglars are taking more than just jewelry and electronics; they're also taking items like lawn mowers and other landscaping tools.
