Neighbors heartbroken over 8-year-old boy's stabbing death

People in a Rockford neighborhood fight back tears as they talk about an 8-year-old boy stabbed to death.  His mother is charged with murder. It's been tough for the far west side neighborhood. The house is at the end of a little dead end street just across from Ingersoll Golf Course, most of the children there play together and the neighbors all know each other.

"Something like that that could happen to any child is shocking. But that you know, interacted with and is in the same age range as your child it's absolutely heartbreaking and shocking," says Donald Bowling.

A razor scooter and flipped over skateboard sit in the yard at 228 Woodrow Street.  They are Thomas Kossow's toys.

"He used to play with my children when they were around and he used to come to the house practically wanting to borrow their bikes to ride with his sister," says Bowling.

Neighbors say Thomas was not your typical kid. He was extremely polite and well mannered.

"He'd go out every Tuesday bring my trash cans in. If I wasn't feeling good he'd go to the mailbox to me. He was a sweet little kid," says Tauhidah El-amin. She says Thomas often called her Granny.

"Politest young man at that age that I've ever met in my life, mature for his age," says Bowling.

Tuesday around 12:30 a.m., the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department was called to 228 Woodrow. They found Thomas dead in his driveway, stabbed several times, his mom Jody Kossow next to him. They also discovered a knife nearby.

"I couldn't figure out what was going on," says El-amin. She woke up in the middle of the night. "And then I heard her screaming out there so she must have come to her senses of what she must have done."

She is talking about Jody Kossow, Thomas' mother. Police arrested the 39-year-old standing near her son's body.

"Everybody around here kind of got along with them but she would kind of go off into space every now and then but other than that nothing that I would have thought that would bring this on," says El-amin.

Bowling and his girlfriend had been up all night along with most of the neighborhood waiting for word on Thomas. Around 9 a.m. they came with a teddy bear trying to let him know he will be missed.

"He'd just get that big smile in your face and light your day up," says Bowling.

"I can't believe he's gone. I really can't," says El-amin.

Jody Kossow is charged with first degree murder. She has a 13-year-old daughter and a husband who was home at the time. The girl is currently with her father. Jody Kossow in the Winnebago County Jail.
