UPDATE: Rockford boy fatally stabbed overnight named

According to Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia, the boy's name is Thomas. An autopsy showed he died from multiple stab wounds to his torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:13 a.m. Tuesday.

Thomas was a student at McIntosh Elementary and the district's Crisis Team and grief counselors visited the school Tuesday to speak to staff and students.


The Winnebago County State's Attorney's Office authorized first degree murder charges on 39-year-old Jody L. Kossow. She has been lodged in the Winnebago County Jail. Kossow is the mother of the child.


Early this morning around 12:40 a.m. Winnebago County Sheriff's Deputies were sent to 228 Woodrow Avenue for a death investigation.

When they got to the scene they found an 8-year-old boy deceased in the driveway.  There were apparent stab wounds on his body.

The child's mother was in the driveway next to the child. She was detained and taken to the Sheriff's Department Detective Bureau for further investigation.  Other family members were inside the home.

The boy's body was transported to the Winnebago County Coroner's Office where an autopsy will be scheduled.  The investigation is still under review by the Winnebago County State's Attorney Office.


According to the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department a child was killed last night at 228 Woodrow Street in Rockford. At this time we do not know how or when the child was killed. We will bring you more details on this story as soon as they become available.
