Chris Sale outpitched Max Scherzer, denying him 20 wins, and Miguel Cabrera was ejected in the first inning as the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 5-1 on Monday night.
Sale (11-12) gave up one run and four hits in eight innings to win for the fifth time in six decisions.
Scherzer (19-3) gave up five runs and six hits in four innings as he lost consecutive starts for the first time this season after Boston beat him Sept. 3. It was Detroit's fifth loss in six games, dropping the Tigers' lead in the AL Central to 4 1-2 games over Cleveland.
Cabrera was tossed by home plate umpire Brian Gorman after arguing a call. Manager Jim Leyland was promptly ejected soon after while defending his player.
