Rock Valley College's theater program takes statewide spotlight

ROCKFORD (WREX) -

A Rockford entertainment venue takes center stage honored with a statewide award. For the first time in Illinois Theatre Association history, the group selects Rock Valley College's Starlight and Studio theaters to receive this year's Excellence in College/University Theatre Award.

"I was just stunned. It's for the whole department, it's a pretty humbling thing." -says RVC Theater Director Mike Webb.

The ITA only selects one program in each of its excellence categories. Webb says his whole team, from on stage to behind the scenes, is responsible for this award.

"We try to keep it so we do it for the right reasons, so everyone cares about what they're doing and cares about the production outcome and cares about giving theater to the community."

RVC offers a college theater program, but Webb says what sets it apart is the department's involvement in the Rockford area. Plus, unlike traditional academic programs, RVC strives for a professional theater experience. Cast members don't just come from a pool of RVC students.

"We have 90 year-olds that participate we have five year-olds that participate, so we've got all the way across the board. We've got Girl Scout troops and Cub Scout troops that help in concession stands and everybody buys into this idea that we can do really good quality, affordable theater in Rockford."

RVC is gearing up for its studio theater 2013-2014 season. The department will be showing Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof and Ahknaton. Click here for more information on dates and ticket prices.
