Illinois tourism soars in 2012

According to 2012 statistics, for the first time Illinois has hosted more than 100 million tourists in one year.

The state released figures for international visitors says more than 2 million tourists visited the state in 2012 from outside the U.S. This is an 11.8 percent increase from 2011. Added with the number of domestic tourists this puts the state over 100 million visitors for the first time.

The state announced earlier this summer that it hosted 99 million domestic tourists during 2012. That is a 6.1 percent increase over the 93 million visitors that state had in 2011.

Combined domestic and international travelers spent 33.5 billion dollars in Illinois last year raising the percent to 5.7. With all that money made, state officials say 300,000 jobs were created in the Illinois economy.
