The Rockford Aviators, presented by Pearson, got a two-run seventh to, at the time, tie the game, but gave up a walkoff sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth and lost to the Gateway Grizzlies 3-2 Friday night.

Gateway's Chris McClendon hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first to give the Grizzlies an early 2-0 lead, where it stayed until the seven.

Jeff Kremer hit a solo home run in the seventh to cut the Gateway lead to 2-1. Brandon Newton then singled and stole second base. Newton scored one batter later on Edgar Corcino's RBI double to tie the game at two.

The Aviators loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth, but failed to score when Matt Greener and Kenny Bryant both struck out.

Alex Guthrie led off the bottom of the ninth with a single for Gateway and was immediately sacrificed to second. Michael Pair walked and Jonathan Johnson then singled to load the bases. Michael Wing then hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Guthrie and gave the Grizzlies the 3-2 victory.

Game two of the series begins at 7:05 p.m. Saturday night. Fans can listen to the game on 100.5 NTA-FM or online at www.rockfordaviators.com.
