Red Cross gives 12 tips on having a safe Labor Day weekend

For many, Labor Day means an extra day off work and their last chance to travel. With that in mind, the American Red Cross has issued several tips to keep people safe during the long weekend.

Traveling tips:

  • Put an emergency supply kit in the trunk of your car
  • Tell someone your destination, route, and estimated time of arrival
  • Fasten your seat belt and obey the speed limit
  • Never drink and drive

Swimming tips:

  • Check the weather and water conditions both beforehand and throughout the day
  • Always bring a buddy and swim in a designated area that is supervised by a lifeguard
  • Constantly supervise children in or near the water and stay within arm's reach
  • Make sure young children and inexperienced swimmers are wearing U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets

Grilling tips:

  • Keep grills away from the house, tree branches, or anything else that could catch fire
  • Always follow instructions from the manufacturer
  • Keep children and pets away
  • Never add starter fluid when coals have already been ignited
