ROCKFORD (WREX) -

A local World War II veteran celebrated a milestone with his 102nd birthday Monday.

Travis Green spent the day surrounded with friends and family members at Rockford's American Legion. Green says he doesn't know what his secret is to live such a long and healthy life. In fact, he says he's shocked he made it this far. He didn't expect to live past his 60s.

"I never before and never will believe that I would have lived to see this day," said Green.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, about 680 WWII veterans pass away each day, making Green's birthday that much more special.
