84-year-old man dies in Marengo Road crash

An 84-year-old Algonquin man is dead after a two-car crash that occurred Thursday morning at the intersection of Marengo and Diekman Roads.

Crews responded just after 10:30 a.m. and found a 1994 Dodge Ram that was turning east onto Marengo from Diekman when it was rear-ended by a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Jeep overturned and hit a tree.

The Jeep's driver, Gerhard Von Dahlen, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He later died of his injuries at Sherman Hospital in Elgin. The driver of the Dodge, 70-year-old Edwin Deackman of Huntley, was not injured.

The crash is still under investigation; alcohol is not suspected as playing a role.
