Matt Weckler coached Belvidere High School for six years. Now he has a new team to coach. Weckler took the DeKalb job in February, and now has a full week of practice under his belt.
"This has been a lot of fun," Weckler said. "Everything is new, not only to us as a coaching staff but also to the players. We're gaining a lot of momentum. I think kids are having a lot of fun playing football."
"So far he's been really good to us," junior running back Dre Brown said. "There's a lot of excitement around the program seeing what he's done at Belvidere. We have a lot of good players here so hopefully we can turn this thing around."
DeKalb went 2-7 last year and has not had a winning season since 1989. Weckler hopes to turn around the team's fortunes. The Barbs open the season Friday, August 30 at Vernon Hills.
