In Rockford, Summerdale Elementary School's principal launched a program to prepare kids for the first day of class.
Some of the students at the school come from needy families and can't afford basic school supplies. Principal Kristin Martin-Fry's mother began hand-making backpacks for children who would otherwise go without.
"So when they come to school and if they don't have one or have access to get a backpack we give them one that my mom has made for them and they just light up their so excited and you can just see the feeling that somebody cares about them when they get these backpacks," said Martin-Fry.
About 25 kids got backpacks last year. This time around that total could be anywhere between 50 and 70.
