ROCKFORD (WREX) -
The crime rate in Rockford this July has been mainly stable or even down but you would never know it from all the homicides. There were nine in just the first few weeks in July.
Police sirens, gunfire and families crying became a common sight in Rockford last month.
"It's kinda scary knowing people are just riding past shooting people like that."
From July 4 through July 18th Rockford saw nine homicides. Most of them were shooting deaths. There was also a hit and run, plus two people beaten in their home in separate incidents. And separate is the key.
"A lot of the cases that have happened in July of the murders they are not necessarily related to any other incidents. They are isolated incidents," says Lt. Marc Welsh.
That makes them harder to solve with so many police resources being pulled in different directions. But police say they are making headway. They now have some strong leads in the shooting on Arcadia that left one person dead and another man shot. Investigators think it was gang-related.
"The suspects and the victims in the case reviewing a more throughout look at their histories are showing their might be some gang ties," says Lt. Welsh.
Rockford detectives say they expect to have some people in handcuffs for the other murder investigations soon.
"Some of the cases we do have solid leads in and we are getting closer to making an arrest," says Lt. Welsh.
Rockford Police have made one arrest in the July murders. Reed Catalano is charged with beating an elderly woman to death in her home on South Sixth Street.
