A Rockford woman accused of beating, starving and forcing her 3-year-old daughter to do extreme exercises that eventually resulted in her little girl's death gets a plea deal. Melanie Grant was before a judge on charges she and her boyfriend abused her daughter to death.
In March 2011, Rockford paramedics went to a home at 614 11th Street and found Kaitlyn Head had died. Prosecutors say Grant had beaten her daughter with a belt in the days before leaving bruises and scars on the little girl's body. Plus, earlier that year in January, Grant admitted she starved her daughter and that she would also punish her by forcing her to do extreme exercises.
Prosecutors say Grant also made one of her other daughters, who was only 10-years old at the time, participate in punishment of Kaitlyn. Grant pleaded guilty to aggravated assault of a child and endangering the life of a child. Part of the deal includes testifying against her boyfriend Duran Johnson, who still faces murder charges in Kaitlyn's death.
The plea deal is for 22 years. If the judge accepts the sentencing recommendation Grant would get out when she is 53-years-old.
A Rockford woman has plead guilty to charges of beating and starving her three-year-old daughter to death in 2011.
Melanie Grant and her boyfriend, Duran Johnson, were arrested for the death of Grant's daughter Kaitlyn Head. Police say Grant and Johnson beat Head for over a day before her death. Head's four-year-old and ten-year-old sisters were also injured.
Grant plead guilty Monday to aggravated battery and endangering the life of a child in exchange for testifying against Johnson. In the deal she is suppose to get 22 years in prison. She will have a status hearing on her sentence on September 13.
In court Grant admitted to personally beating and starving her child in addition to forcing her to perform excessive exercise that resulted in the child's death.
Johnson is still up for trial.
