Big 5th Inning Propels Aviators to Win


The Rockford Aviators, presented by Pearson, used a six-run fifth inning to beat the visiting Southern Illinois Miners 6-2 Monday night at Aviators Stadium.  

Nick Cicio made his second pro start and allowed just one run on six hits, walked two and struck out eight on his way to his second win of the year.
Southern Illinois led 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth. Once Miners starter Travis Bradshaw left the game after four scoreless innings due to being on a pitch count coming off of an injury, Rockford scored six times off of reliever Michael Carden in the fifth.
Elvin Rodriguez collected an RBI walk, then Brandon Newton, Edgar Corcino, Jeff Kremer collected RBIs in succession. Two batters later, Kenny Bryant hit a 2-out, 2-RBI single to give the Aviators a 6-1 lead after five innings.
Matt Frahm, Andrew Snowdon and Trevor Harden combined out of the bullpen to allow just one run (a solo home run by Gerardo Avila in the eighth off of Snowdon) over the final four innings.
Rockford will go for the series win against Southern Illinois Tuesday afteroon on Splash Day at Aviators Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m.
