Snappers Drop Series to Cougars

Felix Pena held the Beloit Snappers to one run over six innings to earn the victory as the Kane County Cougars outdid the Snappers, 4-1, in Midwest League action at Pohlman Field with 1,186 at the ballpark on Friday night.

Consecutive losses by the Snappers give them a record of 62-41 (19-14 in the second half). The Cougars win to take two of three and they're record is 39-59 (9-23 in the second half).
Pena (4-3) was overpowering on the mound and Beloit's lineup couldn't find an answer. In six innings, he totaled seven strikeouts while walking only one and giving up four hits. Pena struck out at least one batter in every inning except the fourth, which was the only frame in which the Snappers sent up more than four men.  The fourth was also when Beloit got their only run of the night, as a John Wooten (2-4, RBI) single brought in Christopher Bostick.
Kane County's offense put up a few early runs against Dakota Bacus (8-4), which proved to be plenty for their starter. In the second, a single, a walk and a passed ball put two men in scoring position and the game's first run scored when Reggie Golden (2-4, RBI) grounded out. Dan Vogelbach made the score 2-0 in the third with a sacrifice fly and, one inning later, Wilson Contreras's (1-3, HR, 2 RBIs, run) ninth homer of the year tallied a pair, doubling the lead.
Three relievers finished the job for the Cougars. Andrew McKirahan took the seventh and, while he did allow a couple of baserunners, he escaped the jam without a run scoring. Stephen Perakslis pitched the eighth and also threw a scoreless frame. Michael Hamann closed the game out with a perfect ninth, earning his third save.
The Snappers will begin a new series on Saturday, this one with the Quad Cities River Bandits. Game one will begin at 7:00pm and Beloit's RHP Andres Avila (4-1, 3.36 ERA) will pitch against Quad Cities' RHP Chris Devenski (0-2, 7.00 ERA). Pohlman Field will take a trip back in time for 80's Night. Come to the ballpark in your best 80's outfit and listen to 80's music all night long. The best dressed fan will win a DVD of the movie "The Breakfast Club." Another spectacular fireworks show will close out the evening, this one sponsored by Christofferson Moving and Storage.
