13 News Team puts the pedal to the metal at Rockford Speedway

Posted: Updated:

It's a night at the track as the Rockford Speedway hosts the 44th annual Loves Park Police VS Businessmen Grudge Race. A few people used to covering the event, competed in it, but the real winners at the end of the day, might not even be old enough to drive the cars.

"We raise money and a lot of the money that we raise goes towards charities for the kids. Our motto is 'We race, and the kids win.'" -says Dan Gouchenour with the Loves Park Police Association.

There's a rumor that this year is the race's last. Organizers hope their dedication and drive pull through.

"We are really going to try to keep this going, we just need the help and the support for it all." -Gouchenour adds.

In between the real races for a good cause, Rockford area media puts the pedal to the metal. We're all trying to bring you stories first, but in the driver's seat, it's about getting to the finish line first. At 13, you'd think because we all work at the same station, we're all on the same team, but there are plenty of WREX rivalries out on the track.

"May the best driver win!" -Hannah Welker says to Greg Bobos.

Greg comes back with, "I'll see you at the finish line I'll be waving back at you."

Rebecca Klopf explains, "The morning show is ridiculous, first of all. I've seen Hannah drive and she's hit a lot of things, but she hasn't actually gone in a straight line."

Hannah answers, "Don't believe anything she says I'm a great driver."

At the end of the day, our own Eric Sorensen and Rebecca Klopf won the Media Race's male and female divisions. After the race wraps up, the Loves Park Police Association will work on picking a charity to give proceeds to.
