Fifteen new Rockford police officers celebrated their graduation from the Southwestern Illinois Police Academy on Friday.
The officers underwent 10 weeks of training at the academy and will now head to City School for six weeks. City School curriculum includes operational patrol function training with an emphasis on writing reports and tactics of physical control. The Department Accreditation program is also included.
After they successfully complete City School, the officers will work under a Field Training Officer for four months before being assigned to solo patrols.
With the 15 new officers, the Rockford Police Department will have a staff of 276, nine under its authorized strength. The department plans to hire more officers on October 1.
