Weekend Preview: Bookerfest, Brat Days, Yarn Bombing, and more

Even though temperatures have been scorching this week, things should cool down just in time to take advantage of this weekend's big events.

The 2013 Bookerfest Celebration is arguably the weekend's biggest draw, going from 5:00 p.m. on Friday through 8:00 p.m. on Sunday. The free event will feature entertainment, music, food, and more. There will be basketball and urban hockey tournaments as well as a performance from Hip Hop Congress. The festival is held on the Booker Washington Community Center grounds in honor of the 97-year-old organization. For more information, visit www.bookerwashingtoncc.org.

Alpine Kiwanis kicked off their annual Brat Days at three separate locations Friday morning. All proceeds raised go to local non-profits, scholarships, and national disasters. Volunteers will be serving up brats at the three sites (Edgebrook, Schnucks on East State, and Schnucks on Harlem Road) until 8:00 p.m. on Friday and from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Cost is $6 and menu options include Johnsonville brats, all-beef hot dogs, and meatless BBQ sandwiches.  Vegetarian brats will be sold at Edgebrook and Schnucks on Harlem. For more, visit www.alpinekiwanis-il.com.

After lunch, get a fun dose of art at Klehm Arboretum's Yarn Bombing Exhibit. The arboretum's entrance and the Nancy Olson Children's Garden will get a shot of color and pattern thanks to local knitters. The exhibit kicks off with a Knit in Public presentation from noon to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for seniors, students, and children, and free for members and kids under two. Visit www.klehm.org for more information.

You can wind down your Saturday with a great date night or girls night out at Davis Park. There will be a free outdoor showing of Les Miserables on the north lawn at sundown, with gates opening at 7:00 p.m. Barefoot Wines will be on hand with wine tastings. Remember to bring a blanket or lawn chair.

Or, if you prefer live entertainment, catch the performance of Xanadu at the Starlight Theatre. The musical comedy follows a Greek muse who descends from Mount Olympus to Venice, California in 1980 to help a struggling artist. Tickets are between $20 and $25.
