Backpack drive aims to help homeless Rock County kids

Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois is teaming up with Project 16:49 to collect backpacks for homeless kids in Rock County.

The two groups are asking for the following items to be donated:

  • New school supplies like spiral notebooks, pens and pencils, and folders
  • Non-perishable, pop-top food times like canned fruits and vegetables, canned soup, packaged nuts, and pasta
  • Boxed drinks and juice
  • Gallon-sized ziplock bags
  • Food gift cards

Donations can be made at the Goodwill Retail Store/Donation Center at 2543 Prairie Avenue in Beloit between July 21 and July 27.

To help local homeless kids prepare for the upcoming school year, Goodwill will give between 75 and 100 homeless teens backpacks filled with gift cards for food, along with school supplies and information on resources.

"Currently there are over 500 homeless youth in the Beloit School District," Courtney Geiger, Director of Mission Services at Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois, said. "Resources in the community and at the state level are quickly decreasing and Goodwill is proud to partner with Project 16:49 to benefit at least 75 youth with this program."
