Crews with the Rockford Fire Department responded to the Howard Johnson Hotel on 11th Street early Tuesday morning for a fire near the pool.
The first units arrived around 6:00 a.m. and launched an aggressive interior attack, bringing the fire under control within 30 minutes. The building sustained heavy smoke damage and 48 adults and children were displaced.
Crews stayed on the scene for several hours and the Red Cross and Human Services are helping those who were displaced with temporary housing.
The fire is still under investigation and caused about $25,000 in damage.
Firefighters were called to the hotel on July 3 for a separate incident.
