Autism awareness event sheds light on Rockford resources

For five years, an effort made by local sponsors showcases the Autism support services the Rockford area has to offer.  The event took place again Saturday at Lou Bachrodt Auto Mall.

Some statistics on Autism show that 1 in 88 children including 1 in 54 boys is affected by Autism.  The disease is growing in diagnoses.  This year, studies show that more children will be diagnosed with Autism than with AIDS, diabetes and cancer combined.

It's the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S. but area resources aim to make dealing with the disease easier.

Parents can learn the signs of Autism and find out their options after the diagnosis.

Hanah Oakes is Autistic.  But she doesn't let the disease hold her back.  It wasn't until the age of 11 that Hanah was able to speak, Saturday she addressed the crowd at the event and shared her experiences.

The event took place from 10-2 Saturday at Lou Bachrodt.
