NIU Kicker Sims Named to Groza Watch List

Northern Illinois University place kicker Mathew Sims became the third Huskie named to a preseason watch list when the senior was named to the 2013 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award Watch List.

Presented by the Orange Bowl Committee, the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award is named in honor of National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Kickers on the Lou Groza Award Watch List were chosen based on statistics from the 2012 season and 2013 expectations.
A native of Hannibal, Mo., Sims set the NIU records for most field goal attempts (67) and converted (66) in 2012. He was 15-of-19 in field goal attempts last year, including a three-for-three performance in the Mid-American Conference Championship game. Sims helped the Huskies to a 44-37 double-overtime win over Kent State, connecting on a 40-yard boot in the first overtime.
Sims helped NIU to its first MAC title in 28 years when he hit a 33-yard field goal as time expired to give the Huskies a 23-20 victory over Ohio, 23-20, in the 2011 MAC Championship game. He kicked a school record 54-yard field goal at Western Michigan and scored a touchdown on a fake field goal against Central Michigan.
One of four players from the MAC on the list, Sims is joined on the list by Jeremiah Detmer of Toledo, Eastern Michigan's Dylan Mulder and Kaleb Patterson of Miami (Ohio).
Sims joins teammates Jordan Lynch (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Carmel) and Tommylee Lewis (Riviera Beach, Fla./W.T. Dwyer) on preseason watch lists. Lynch and Lewis were named to the Hornung Award Watch List, while Lynch was also named to the Maxwell Award Watch List.
