RPS 205's Dr. Willis & Dr. Jarrett discuss leadership transition

Posted: Updated:

Rockford Public Schools keeps its same mission, but a new leader will carry that mission forward. The days of the top administrator are winding down, but he's got full confidence in his replacement.

Superintendent Dr. Robert Willis was brought to District 205 in May of 2011. In just a couple days, his contract will be up and Dr. Ehren Jarrett's begins.

"I just cannot wait to get started. I feel really good about the preparation I've received working with a great mentor like Dr. Willis." -Dr. Jarrett explains.

Both leaders have spent about the same amount of time in Rockford. Under this administration, Dr. Willis says the district has grown.

"Readiness Rocks, which we work on as our core sense of direction, the college and career academies, the Seven Periods to Success which enabled us to bring back the fine arts and foreign languages, more accelerated classes and more remedial classes for kids who need help."

Dr. Willis was also in charge when 60% of voters okayed a referendum to update District 205 buildings. The district also brought pre- school enrollment up to 2,600 kids. Dr. Jarrett thinks these accomplishments show the platform for RPS 205 is already set, but there's always room for improvement.

"Our schools work incredibly well for some of our students, students who take an Advanced Placement course every year, their average act is a 27, so it's working really well for those students, where we're not working as well is across-the-board and we want that experience for all of our students." -Dr. Jarrett adds.

Dr. Willis has accepted the Interim Superintendent position in Stillman Valley for Meridian CUSD 223.
