The Department of Veterans Affairs is slowly tackling a massive backlog of disability claims for veterans, reducing it by about 15 percent in the past few weeks.
Although some Republican legislators are skeptical about the department's continued improvement, they cannot seem to come to an agreement on how to fix the issue.
In March, about 70 percent of the VA's claims, over 633,000, were pending longer than 125 days and veterans have complained for years that claims took too long to resolve. The department said Thursday the total claims were reduced to 531,000 thanks to mandatory overtime and other steps.
The VA pays benefits to veterans who are hurt or become ill as a result of active service.
