Bad First Inning Dooms Snappers

BELOIT (WREX) -

The Clinton LumberKings erupted for seven runs in the first inning in a 9-4 dismantling of the Beloit Snappers on Friday night at Pohlman Field in Midwest League action with a crowd of 1161 on hand.

Beloit's second straight loss leaves them at 41-27, but they still remain tied with Cedar Rapids for first place in the Western Division. Clinton gets a game closer to .500 at 33-34.

After the game's lead-off batter flew out, the LumberKings started teeing off on starting pitcher Derek DeYoung (4-2). The next man walked and Dario Pizzano drove in the first run with a double. One out later, a Patrick Kivlehan single tallied a second run. Another hit and a walk loaded the bases and Gabriel Guerrero singled back through the box, plating a pair for a 4-0 lead. Brock Hebert followed with an RBI double and Jabari Henry, who began the frame, completed the onslaught with a two-run single.

The Snappers, however, didn't fold in the face of a 7-0 deficit. Renato Nunez got them on the board with a solo homer in the second and they added three in the third, one on a Nunez RBI single and the next two dented home on a Matt Olson double.

Clinton managed to go up by four courtesy of a Taylor Ard RBI single, but both lineups settled down after that. Lumberkings' relievers Mark Bordonaro (1-0) and Blake Holovach threw two hitless innings. Beloit did mount a threat in the seventh, loading the bases with one out, but luck was not on their side. Bruce Maxwell hit a grounder that seemed ticketed for center, but was slowed when it hit the mound, allowing Clinton to turn a double play. In the top of the ninth, more bad luck led to an unearned run, providing insurance and a 9-4 edge.

Grady Wood was given the responsibility of throwing the last two frames and he tossed two perfect innings, striking out the last two batters to finish the game.

The Saturday pitching matchup is RHP Austin House (1-3, 3.38 ERA) for the Snappers and LHP Anthony Vasquez (3.60 ERA) for the LumberKings. First pitch time is 7:00pm. Fireworks are once again on the docket, thanks to Rock Energy Cooperative, allowing fans to enjoy another spectacular show.
