Attorney General Madigan wants "kill switch" for stolen phones

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has called on smartphone manufacturers to develop a "kill switch" for stolen smart phones.

Madigan announced she was joining other attorneys general, city police chiefs, and advocates in the quest at a summit with Apple, Google/Motorola, Microsoft, and Samsung on Thursday.

The goal is to develop a system where the smart phone's user could make the phone inoperable after a theft, thereby making the phone worthless.

Theft of smartphones has increased over the last few years, with some being violent.
