After an appointment by the chairman, all 22 Stephenson County Board seats are now filled. Some people call the appointment process "an embarrassment."
After a Republican County Board member resigned, her spot had to be filled with someone from the same party. So, the Republican Central Committee put together candidates they think should represent District G, but Chairman Bill Hadley had the final say in who takes the seat.
It took an hour from the time Chairman Hadley introduced the appointment item to the final vote. One after the other, community and County Board members express disappointment in how the Chairman selected Cornerstone Credit Union President Gail Clore for District G.
"The state statute does indicate that you have the final say, but then what's the point of notifying the parties of vacancy what's the point of the comment in the newspaper back in April that you're going to notify the central committees so we can get a candidate so we can get filled in Man, other than they're going to supply a candidate?" -asks board member David Schexnayder.
Dr. Frank Whitmer is the Republican Caucus's pick. His supporters say Chairman Hadley wouldn't even allow an up or down vote for Dr. Whitmer, but the Chairman stands by his choice.
"I'll bring forward a person that I believe will have expertise in Finance, she has a degree in Accounting, a Master's degree in Finance and Business Administration." -Chairman Hadley says.
Clore was appointed by a 13 to 8 vote. A few County Board members say the next election, 17 months from now, will be the real determination for who should represent District G.
