A total of five former Northern Illinois University students are quarterfinalists for a competitive national award.
More than 30,000 people were nominated for the Music Educator Award. That list was whittled down to about 200 people. Of those quarterfinalists are the five past NIU music students.
The school of music's director, Paul Bauer, said having just one person make it to that stage of the competition would be an honor. He adds it speaks volumes about the school's program.
"These are alumnus who completed degrees here as recently as three years or as mans as 30 years ago. So it really shows over three decades of time we've had students coming out of here who are outstanding music teachers," said Bauer.
The finalists are:
Peter Barsch, teacher at Oswego East High School, Oswego.
Gordon Krauspe, teacher at Wheaton Warrenville South High School, Wheaton.
Charles "Chuck" Morgan, teacher at Joliet Junior College, Joliet.
Keven Shepherd, teacher at Miller Grove High School, Lithonia, Ga.
Ben Wahlund, teacher at Naperville Central High School, Naperville.
