Rockford officers are expanding efforts to catch copper thieves.
Police say thieves are going into vacant or foreclosed homes and stealing the metal. More and more calls are coming into the department on the problem, but some of those calls are reporting theft that happened potentially a month ago. Now officers are doing wellness checks on vacant properties.
"Property owners don't check on the residence for months so by the time they come back it's been shredded of all copper and now we've gone out and started an initiative where we're checking vacant properties," said Deputy Chief Lori Sweeney.
Rockford police have a list of all vacant and foreclosed properties. That's how they'll work toward preventing copper theft.
