A Beloit man is dead after a traffic stop leaves behind bullets and broken glass. It happened around 5 p.m. Tuesday. Investigators say the suspect was wanted by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. When two Beloit officers spotted him, they attempted to pull him over near East Grand Avenue and State Street with squad cars in front of and behind his car, but he tried to get away.
"The individual pulled forward, ramming the rear end of the [police] car in front of him and then pulling out. The officer on that side of the vehicle feared that he was going to be run over and shots were fired by the officers. The suspect unfortunately did not survive." -says Beloit Police Department Detective Bureau Captain Vince Sciame.
As Captain Sciame releases the news, a woman cries out when she hears this man was shot and killed. Beloit resident Shawnna Meinen claims he is the father of her young child. She says he wasn't perfect, but he should be alive.
"He was on probation he did have warrants out for his arrest that is true, but him trying to run an officer over and trying to get away, I don't believe it and I feel they had no reason to shoot him, now he's dead and now he's got a four year-old daughter that's never going to see him again." -Meinen explains with tears in her eyes.
A gun is visible near the back left tire of the suspect's white vehicle. Investigators say the officers fired shots, but it's unclear if the suspect did.
"I'm not going to comment on the investigation at this point, it'll all be determined through the investigation." -says Captain Sciame.
For Shawnna Meinen, all she says remains in memory of this man is a tattoo of his name on her neck and their four year-old daughter Desire.
"I'm waiting for them to bring him to the hospital so I can see him for the last time." -she says.
Police say the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is now handling this case. The two officers have not been identified, there have been place on administrative duty where they'll stay under the investigation is complete.
