UPDATE: Name of gas station shooting victim released

Posted:

Early morning violence in Rockford leaves one dead, and many more residents scared for their safety.

Around 2:00 a.m. Sunday, police responded to a shots fired call. Triple shooting took place. When officers arrived at the scene, they found two men and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds.  All three victims were taken to area hospitals, two were treated and released.

But 34 year old Joseph Henson would not survive his injuries, a single gunshot to the head.

Police believe Henson had gotten in a fight, the person on the other side of that argument pulled out a gun, and fired.

Blood stains and broken glass clearly mark the spot where the Rockford man laid.

"It's just senseless, we hear it every day it seems like. Gunshots. I'm so used to it I just sleep through it now," says Scot Evans, an area resident.

Located right on the corner of 11th Street and Sawyer Road, the Marathon gas station sees a lot traffic over the course of a day.

Evans says, "After 9:00 till 2, 3:00 in the morning this place is full. You see people coming and going with their music loud and it just, when is it ever gonna stop?"

Another area resident, Javier Rodriguez, tries to stay healthy by walking at least a mile every day. "Because I need walking, do exercise. But now can't walk at night no more. I'm scared, really,"  He says the area is too dangerous to be outside after dark.

But not all of the Marathon gas station's customers see it that way. "I'm not worried about stuff like that, as long as I keep out of trouble, don't go looking for it, you ain't gonna find it," says Randy Wilson,  who stops at the gas station regularly.

Henson's killer is still out there. Police have not made any arrests in connection with the shooting. As always, if you know anything, you're encourage to call CrimeStoppers at 815- 987- 5863.
