With the last week of the school year winding down, Freeport High School chemistry teacher Gina Cole is named WREX's last Teacher of the Week for 2012-2013.
"It's gratifying to know that there are students that enjoy being challenged and challenged quite a bit and appreciate that kind of pushing," Mrs. Cole said of her award.
Freeport Junior Sam Michelhaugh has spent the past two years in Cole's chemistry class and says she's deserving of the Teacher of the Week honor for the extra hours she puts in both during and outside of school.
"I've had a lot of fun with her as a teacher so I just wanted to make sure her efforts didn't go unrewarded," Michelhaugh said.
Cole spends her days experimenting and teaching her students how things actually work and her lab days are a big hit, keeping the students excited about science. However, their favorite part about class is setting stuff on fire.
"If we can get the Bunsen burners out and torch some stuff that's always a fun time," Cole said.
But while the experiments may seem glamorous and the most exciting, Cole says her biggest reward is the lifelong impact.
"It's nice to keep in touch with students as they progress academically and then through the rest of their lives so it's a really rewarding position."
