Freeport Police are investigating a murder that occurred at a convenience store in the 800 block of South Galena Avenue just before midnight on Monday, May 27.
Police say the store's clerk, a 30-year-old man, was shot and killed, but did not say what happened. The clerk was pronounced dead at the scene, lying outside the store. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
This is only the first homicide in Freeport this year. In 2012, there were two but in 2011, there were none. Neighbors aren't used to violent crimes occurring in their area but say they'll think twice before walking around again.
Diko Thomas has lived there all her life. She said the store clerk was kind and helpful. She'd often stop in for a soda or other needs.
No word on when the store will reopen, owners were in the area Tuesday but declined to go on camera.
Freeport leaders say they need the community's help finding those responsible of this crime.
Anyone with any information is encouraged to call Freeport Police at 815-235-8226 or Stateline Area Crime Stoppers at 866-867-7669.
